10 Questions at the end of 2021

For the last couple years, I've started to do the questions for the end of the year from Laura's podcast and prompts... it's become an end of year tradition that is a nice way to say farewell to the year

1- What was it like in the beginning?

In the beginning, it was scary. Christmas was quiet and beautiful though we missed family and friends immensely. COVID numbers skyrocketed after the holidays and the kids were home. A's teacher (and also A TBH)  at the time wasn't the best at online schooling so parent involvement was pretty high. It was rough, friends and I'm owning it. There's a reason I didn't go into teaching LOL.
Despite it all though, it was a coziness and a beauty to this season. It was cold outside and we hunkered down as a family. We cooked, watched movies, did "online sleepovers" and lots of virtual happy hours :-).

2- What worked well and what didn't?
I let go of a lot of things re: screen time ... I was winding myself up about lots of things with the kids and their online schooling, their screen time and all the things involved with us all being at home. I'm now choosing the things that matter to me more than before....let's see how that's working come 2022

3- What were the most important conversations and connections?
Someone close to me mentioned that she tries to only worry about the things that she has actual control over... it's something that I'm really trying my best to adhere to going forward. Coincidentally, this person who I've been close to for many years is possibly the most important connection I've had for 2021... more on that later.

4- What was the best entertainment?
The thing that comes to mind is our Modern Family Netflix watching all year round.... It's become awesome bonding for me and the girls many weekday nights.

5- Who mattered?
Everyone! It was nice to start getting together with our nearest and dearest slowly as the summer began and we all began to get vaccinated.

6- What Changed? And Why?
I started working full time in the corporate world once more... What started off as contract job a favour to my friend and old manager became a blessing for me. I threw my hat in the ring for the Brand Manager position and after meeting/interviewing with several key individuals at the company, got the job. It's been such a change for us all, at times overwhelming, at times crazy, at times fun but I LOVE IT!

7- Where did you find happiness and fulfillment?
I am finding LOTS of happiness and fulfillment going back into Marketing Management. I work with a Canadian Candy company and it's such a fun industry to understand, take ownership of and grow in... It's awesome interacting with colleagues on a personal level as well and it's an awesome organisation... If you're Canadian and you know Bearpaws then you know where I work. The people are very kind and helpful, the organisational culture is phenomenal and it's still work from home -- so I can wear joggers and no shoes, ha! When I do have to go into the office, it's six minutes away :-). Oh and my kids think that my job is the coolest as they get to sample Candy and learn industry terms like long bite and short bite.

8- What did you actually learn?
That parenting a pre-teen girl is hard and I need to be less reactive and take things less personally :-).

9- What is actually ending?
It's a big change for us for me to go back full time into the corporate world. The reason I left in 2013 was because of the kids. Mom doing so many things had to stop. Kids have to become more self sufficient and not yell if Mom is in a meeting, ha! D had to step up (and willingly did) with all the many drop offs; grocery shopping  and extra curricular.

10- What do you want more of?
I want good quality family time, kindness and laughter... less screens apart and more together :-). Road trips, little adventures and visits ... And I really, really want to see family in 2022, our parents, brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins.

What about you, friends and family? What beautiful things did you learn in 2021.

10 Questions to mark one year of the Pandemic

I haven't blogged for a hot minute as I've been so busy with work but wanted to pop in to say hi. This month makes one year since the real start of the pandemic on North America. I love  this list of questions from the 10 things podcast .

1- What was life like in early 2020?
We were super busy in early 2020. Work was more hectic and it was lots going on in the evenings with after school activities. We were like hamsters in wheels. We did lots of meal prep and laundry on weekends, hunkered down for winter and were making quite a few plans for the summer. We took insurance on our Portugal trip "just in case" Covid becomes a big deal. Little did we know....

2- What was the biggest change?
So, so many changes. Definitely, the biggest change was how our day to day life of school, work and routine was switched up. We were basically at home for six months and the pace was so much slower. Mornings were glorious... Grocery shopping was an outing, fresh air was crucial,  and the news had never been on as much.

3- What were your coping mechanisms?
It was a frustrating time for sure....We did lots of different things to switch it up and there was so many fun moments.  We did drawing tutorials, tried new recipes, baked way too much, had online happy hours, went for lots of walks, fixed up our backyard a bit, and tried our hand at gardening. We also made a really big deal about different things like Hawaiian night, game days, birthday parades and seafood boils. We explored Ontario but also relaxed at home and enjoyed our backyard.

4- What did connections in your relationships look like?
We were never in touch with people who mattered as much as the last year. Lots of Facetime and when things opened up, lots of walks and a few outdoor gatherings when we were able to.

5- What will you remember most?
I will remember all the quality time spent: virtual or in real time. The family time,  Facetime calls, Zoom parties,  all the beautiful conversations, and how much comfort it brought us in such an uncertain time.

6- What was the biggest challenge?
I would say that would have to be not seeing my parents for more than a year. Add to my mom actually getting Covid, and the anxiety of that, it was very rough. They are now both vaccinated but with the borders being closed, I don't know when I will see them.

7- What was a beautiful memory?
Definitely the moment that we met Toby and then told the girls that he would soon be ours. He has captured ALL of our hearts.

The day that we met him.

8- What do you believe now that you didn't one year ago?
I did not believe that in my lifetime I would see a pandemic... I simply couldn't understand what quarantine and lockdown were and how resourceful we have all become. Now I just hope this is the only one that we will experience for a very long time if ever again.... I also didn't think that it would last this long... a year in and here we are.

9- What would you do differently?
Actually, I'm okay with how we did things...... I cannot think of anything to change.

10- What will you carry forward?
That so many simple things can bring us joy and there were many issues with quarantine but so many blessings as well.  And family and health are more important than everything else!!!

What about you? What was your pandemic experience like?

10 End of Year Questions

Hello, lovelies and Holidays-- I say that until I begin to say Happy New Year, ha!! Hope you all are having a wonderful season filled with joy and fun!

2020 is coming soon!!! Here's a look at a little inward Q& A as we reflect on the past year. Thanks to Dara who got these questions from the 10 things to tell you podcast

1. What was the best part of the year?
The best part of my year was the cruise we took with some family to celebrate my dad's birthday... It came after a pretty stressful couple weeks when A had a health scare and we weren't sure if we could make the cruise. So happy it all worked out and by then we were ready for a vacay! We had an awesome time and needed my family, the sunshine and beach time. As a bonus, we also made it to Universal as well for a couple days.

2. What worked and what didn’t work?
Summer camps-- my kids will repeat their Girls Rock camp until they age out of it, ha! Conversely, they did a YouTube production design/Lego robotics camp and I felt they were on screens a whole, whole lot. They do enough screen time at home, don't need to pay for them to do it as well.

3. What were the best conversations you had this year?
One of my friends told me "not to put myself in that space." It was eye opening. We really do that to ourselves lots as women and we have to be strong enough to change that!

4. What was a discovery you made this year?
That if you and your family are healthy, physically and mentally, that's the most important thing of all.

5. Who was the most influential to you this year?
The guy who created Headspace. I love the guided meditations. It's a journey and I love it.

6. What was the best entertainment you consumed this year?
I loved The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo. It was so heart wrenching and well written.
I also love A Million Little Things and This is Us. Oh and our family became The Masked Singer fanatics in 2019. Love, love, love it!!

7. Who or what are you letting go of?
Things that bring me down or stress me out. Negative energy is not a good thing, friends.

8. What behaviors do you want to change?
I'd like to have more self control- with chips/cookies(!), with my patience with my kids, with screen time....

9. Where did my beliefs shift?
I would say that recognising how important peace of mind and how gradually I  can actually achieve this was a big aha for me!

10. Who do you want to be in the next year?
At the risk of sounding cliche, I want to be a good person and the kind of person my children respect and admire.

What about you? Do any of these resonate with you?

Christmas Confessions

Yay for Thursday- my fourth favourite day of the week!! I thought I'd do a round of Christmas confessions today just to mix it up a bit:

- In my mind, and I'm okay if you disagree with me, after Halloween is too early and as I'm not American, after Thanksgiving is too late. We usually begin our Christmassing either after Divali or Remembrance/Memorial Day.

- I'm not the biggest eggnog fan. Like I'd never have an eggnog cake or latte or anything (ugggg) but my family is. So once or twice for the season, I'll have a (very spiked) drink with them and I wholeheartedly enjoy it.

- We will probably never get a real tree. We love putting up our tree waaay to early and put too much work into it to get a real one. Also, my perfectionist pathology with anything less than a totally symmetrical tree and husband's bad back will not allow it anyways.

- Speaking of perfectionist pathology- when my kids put all of the same ornaments on one branch on one eye level, I'm okay to move them to more aesthetically pleasing locations.

- The recipe for hot buttered rum made me gag once.

- D and I went to see the Nutcracker before we had kids. It was long. After we were done, he muttered, "Well that's two hours of my life, I'll never get back."

- I still say "Merry Christmas."

- Santa and elf threats are awesome. I use them very strategically. #parentoftheyear

or I can do this...

- I reuse Christmas ribbon like someone's granny even before it became cool to reuse stuff. I make nice bows and glue gun them to the package. I draw the line at reusing wrapping paper though- sorry mother-in-law :-).

- Speaking of my mother in law, she wraps the neatest most beautiful presents and it relaxes her. Let's just say the last couple years when she came to visit at Christmas time, wrapping was awesome!!

- When I'm in full on wrapping mode, my bedroom looks like a toddler rampage. Oh the mess!!!

- I've never had figgy pudding and probably never will.

- I like my house sparkly and clean before I go to bed on Christmas Eve! Nobody wants Santa to see their dirty house and put them on the naughty list.

And finally, just some Christmas funnies to make you chuckle!!

Have a wonderful season, friends!!! Oh and Merry Christmas ;-)

What are you secretly good at?

I saw this prompt on A Cup of Jo and knew I had to do it too... a little fun for ya' Friday!

What are the little things you are secretly good at? Here's a little list of ten random things that are my call to fame.  #reallynotreally.

1- I can clean out my fridge, use up what I have and make a really yummy soup.

2- I'm pretty good with accessories like jewelry, hats and scarves.  The trick is one large piece and not overdoing the rest--- or lots of little pieces.

3- Need someone to win shower games. I'm your gal. I usually walk home with a prize.

4- I'm a pretty great editor. Family and friends call on me when they need to send out an important email, text or letter or if they need someone to proofread a presentation.

5- Building on that, I'm awesome at word games like scrabble, cross word puzzles and jumbles. My kids are always asking me for help LOL.

6- I'm the queen of sandwich making. Now that I try not to eat bread, I'm awesome at salads! I constantly invent different flavour combos.

7- I have long arms and legs and a short torso so I can do an amazing bind for all the yogis out there. I appear to be better than I am!

8- I never set an alarm on a regular school/work day. My body clock wakes me up pretty well. When I'm travelling early morning however, I do. I'm not a crazy lady!

9- I can raise my left eyebrow and touch my nose to my tongue

10- I'm great at easy entertaining. No nine step meal for me to make.... I pre-make what I can, buy a few things and try to enjoy my guests as much as possible!

I'm not the only talented one in the bunch. D can choose the best thing on the menu and is better than anyone I know at packing a suitcase or a trunk, Alex is good at making drinks out of whatever you have in your bar and Petal knows the lyrics to every single song ever. C can make me calm more than anyone else can and A's comedic timing is on point. Dani knows how to throw a  cheap, beautiful party and my mother in law is a super hero at making platters.

And a little tongue in cheek quote for ya!

Sidenote, what I'm not good at: dealing with when people don't like me, parallel parking and choosing the worst line in the grocery.

What special talents do you possess?! Sound off below!

Taking a little blogging break for the next 10 days while I spend the last few days of my kids vacay with them! Have a good one, lovelies!

Ten things that make me low key nervous

For today's Wacky Wednesday post, I got this great idea from Steph. it's all about those things that make me a little nervous.... not full on panic attack warranted or anything... but some little things that if I had to, I wouldn't put myself in the situation:

+ Other people's cats brushing my legs. So glad D is allergic.

+ Wearing white to dinner out- especially if it's saucy like Mexican or Indian.

+ Underpacking for a vacay- sidenote, I kind of did it for my kids last month and they lived to tell the tale.

+ Getting too little sleep. I'm a 7-8 hour kind of girl and any less and I stress about it... sometimes waking up and thinking-- with this later bedtime, there's no way I'm getting enough sleep.

+ Having to make impromptu speeches to a crowd

+ Weighing myself after a food filled weekend- like the last one--- eeep!

+ Seeing my side profile in a pic. I'm not a fan. Sidenote, you're probably not going to find any on this carefully curated blog LOL.

+ Under-dressing- either for the weather or for an evening out.

+ Getting to an appointment late. If it's something social, not such a big deal but an appointment-- not at all!!

+ Parallel parking-- especially with an audience of cars waiting for you to get in the spot.... eeekkk. Maybe that one belongs in the things that make me very nervous category.

Am I out to crazy town? Any one agree with any of these? What are those things that make you kind of nervous?  Sound off in the comments below.

Cheers to those quirks, friends!

Wednesday Confessions

Wednesday seems like a totally random day to just fill with some confessions right?! Here we go...

- The other day I gave my kids  chicken noodle soup because C was begging me to buy a soup in the can. I threw some frozen corn in to pretend effort was involved.  A was like "Oh my gosh, who is the chef of this soup?" C responded " Campbells." No words kids, no words.

- Manners mean a whole whole bunch to me and I'm trying to instill it in my kiddos.  Grace is glory, friends!

- This winter weather has me definitely feeling those winter blues--- bleh! Snow days help though!

- Not going to lie. I love a good snow day! Those slower days with the kiddos and family time are sometimes just what we need.
Image result for snow day meme

- I almost never do this except in the summer or on vacay LOL but I totally had wine on a Tuesday night. I blame the snow day and the feeling of downtime with only us... the fantastic four. Ha!

- I freeze when I have a difficult conversation or even a confrontation..... which is almost never.  I get shaken and very upset. After I rehash it in my head and then think of 10 ways I could have said things better. I need to get out of certain head- spaces when people are having real problems out there.

- I am waiting for a warmer day before I fill my gas or wash my car.

- A playing cards with us is the funniest thing. She drops the cards with thought and an exclamation like "Boom" or "Take that." I don't know if to be proud or worried.

- I want to do yoga every week but because of trying to get those damn steps on my fitbit, it's the first thing to fall by the way side if I get 4 days of exercise in instead of my 5-6.

- I have to weigh myself everyday to hold myself accountable when I'm watching what I eat.

- I wasn't a Colton fan so I thought this would be the season I skipped. Yeah that didn't happen. I no longer watch it on a Monday night though. Instead I keep it on in the background while I'm working. That's progress no?

Here's to Wednesday, lovelies! May it be wonderful!

Little Letters

Some of my favourite blog buds did this Little Letters link up last month with Kristin so I thought I'd give it a try!

Dear C,

Thank you for waiting until my birthday was over to begin talking about your birthday. But let's not keep a revolving list of guests please. Let's also keep it to 12 friends this time. And let's decide on a theme-- just dance, pajamas and pancake party? Seems a lot to put on an invitation, no?

Dear A,
I'm SO proud of you for working so hard this week and getting the hundred board done AND beginning home readers. You are a superstar! Also, maybe it's all the learning you're doing but I don't know why you are so hungry all the time lately. If it's 10 minutes after dinner and you proclaim to be hungry and 'not for food', you're most likely bored or dehydrated (a word you busted out recently) and you aren't getting a snack!

Dear Bachelor Team,
This has got to be the most asinine, mind numbing season ever. I was happy Nick was the bachelor but now I'm rethinking things. And the women-- yikes! I'm fast-forwarding, deleting and not even bothering to see who has the 'most amazing connection.'

Dear Warm Leather Mittens,
My hands have never been this warm and cosy. It's the combination of the warmth of mittens (way better than gloves since your fingers are together) and leather to block off the wind. I thank you, I thank D for buying them for me and Priya for the suggestion in the first place.

Dear 30's Metabolic Rate,
Please rewind to 10 years past... Please. ..I'm working my butt off and results are few and far between.

Dear Clients,
Parking Tickets aren't business expenses. Neither are a plethora of Uber and Lyft expenses.

Dear NYC,
The girls and I so excited to be coming to see  you in March for a few days. 5 days of fun, shopping and some family time. Please cooperate with weather and everything else.

Dear Farmboy,
Thank you for all.those.samples. I'm loving the deli selections, dips, fancy cheeses and fruit you provide for my eating pleasure. Grocery shopping has never been this fun!

Dear Husband,
Sometimes I think that though I've never personally bought a lotto ticket, I am the winner here. You made me laugh so hard with that dance video and I keep watching it over and over again. It's like youtube funny-- pity you won't let me share it.

Happy Weekending, loves!

My little mom confessions

Part one was so much fun, I had to do it again! Here are a few of the things you may/may not know about me:

+ I always try to be a little healthy/limit my fried/creamy carbs when we eat out but I sneak more than my share of fries/creamy pasta off my kids plate. Kinda defeats the purpose, no?

+ I have tons of crafts for my kids to do and they have tons of fun doing it but I don't really sit and do it with them. I always think of the thousand more things I could be doing with that time!

+ I have a problem with people not picking up after themselves or their kids when they come to my house-- I'm your host, not your maid.

+ I limit my kids' sugar but I've been known to eat more than my share--- usually sneakily!

+ When they were younger, I totally let my kids use my phone in restaurants to buy myself some time... whatever works right?

+ I hate to be late, hate, hate, hate it... but because of that, I'm always rushing, rushing, rushing to get to places on time-- especially school! And I might 'raise my voice' on 'occasion' to get my kids to comply. (As a sidenote though, the only time C ever got a late slip was when D dropped her to school)

+ When it's naptime, I 'accidentally' skip pages in a book or choose a really short book. When my kid chooses books like "Dragons Love Tacos", I cringe.

+ Speaking of naptime, I love naptime--- it's an hour or more of free time to do what I need to do! C napped 'til she was almost five and a half and A's just about done with naps and begun skipping them but I'm holding on for dear life!

And there you have it friends! T-minus two days 'til moving but you can bet that I'm coming back to read those confessions! Linking up with Andrea for Show and Tell Tuesdays!

Some little confessions

These mom-fessional (mom confessional) moments are real, my friends. Here are just a few things are do on almost a daily basis to keep me somewhat sane:

+ I throw out artwork like it’s my job. Unless it’s really good, then I keep it… sometimes. But seriously, when your six year old loves art and comes home with 7 scraps of paper from her Montessori— it almost instantly goes in the recycling.

+ Regifting my kids presents that are not used, they’re too old for etc.  is not below me.

+ If perchance my kids go in the backyard for a little while and I forget to slather them with sunscreen, I tell myself they need the Vitamin D  in this Canadian climate

+ I don’t entertain my kids all the time. Call it laziness on my part but I think it’s okay for them to be a little bored. They get very creative.

+ I use my mom voice ( and empty threats) almost every-single-morning to get us out the door somewhat on time.

+ Evening park time is not my favourite. I’m soooo tired by the time evening rolls around  so if D does it, I stay home and clean up, blog  or just put away stuff. Same for bath. If he would do it every day, I would be soooo happy.

Bribery is a parenting tool in this house. I use it often and salaciously

+ When D is out, working late, at a conference , I put my girls to bed quite a bit earlier.  Sometimes it’s daylight, sometimes it’s not.

+ I'm a pretty clean person but my car since having kids looks like a bomb of paper, beanie boos and shoes have exploded in it.

+ My kids have a candy box that’s not in their reach for some occasional treats.  When there’s chocolate in there, I often partake.

(And if you're looking for a true momfessional moment, that involves a baby, a bare bottom and a carpet, you have to read this post from a few years ago)

And there you have it. What are your mom confessions?
