Father's Day Weekend 2016

And just like that it turned into Monday! Here's a few snapshots from our weekend.

On Friday, the girls and I were solo so we did swim lessons, ate leftovers, had a blind-folded taste test and watched The Princess Diaries.

 On Saturday:
+ a friend came to visit and help me out for a few days and was showing us how to tie a scarf around the kids (hands free indeed)
+ we ran errands and bought Father's Day gifts
+ I tried the 'pink drink'- we don't have strawberry acai in Canada so I subbed hibiscus berry. It really wasn't all that
+ C had her first book signed by an author.
+ D got his new bike
+ the girls went to a movie with my friend so D and I  headed to a patio for sangrias and appies
+ I made an orange berry bread- D did all the stirring

On Sunday:
+ we opened presents-- lego for the win
+ the orange bread was an awesome light breakfast
+ we headed to the Cambridge Mill for a champagne brunch-- oysters and crab legs for the win-- I always get my money's worth
+ C and I went for a nice  sweaty walk
+ we swam in the sweltering heat and drank some mojitos

Happy Monday, friends!

Kids behind the blog- Dad!

Kids say the most random things. Some of these questions literally made me snort with laughter! On this edition of Kids Behind The Blog, just in time for Father's Day, the questions are all about Daddy!

The comments in parenthesis are of course my peanut gallery POV.

What do you like doing with Daddy?

C- playing lego
A- Daddy daughter time

What was Daddy like as a little boy?

C- he had hair like Anjali but curly hair (meaning he had Anjali's length of hair--- aka girl hair)
A- just stares at me blankly and says 'I don't know'

What’s Daddy’s favorite food?

C- EVERYTHING (in a loud exclaiming voice)
A-mmm, pasta I think.

What does Daddy do at work?

C- He's a radiation oncologist and he finds out the cancer that different people need (???)
A- I think he brings masks for your mouth and popsicle sticks (tongue depressors)

What is your favorite memory of Daddy?

C- I have so many--- hmmmm, when me and daddy went skating together for the first time.
A- another blank stare.

Bubble Gum Excitement

My kids are officially obsessed with gum. We don't let the kids have gum too often. Well, A isn't allowed at all  since she's two(she gets another treat to tide her over) but C was introduced to gum when her dad took her skating on Saturdays. She thinks it is the best thing in the entire WORLD. She chews and ches and chews for hours. I don't get it. Even as a kid, I got sick of all the chewing especially when the gum lost its flavour. She is always asking for gum as a treat when we go to the store.

Now, I don't let her get it ordinarily-- the regular gum is sugar free so I don't want her to get all that aspartame into her 6 year old body. And the gum with sugar has corn syrup in it so that's no bueno either. However, last Friday I did get her one as a treat.

Then Dad grabbed a piece. Bubble blowing ensued. And then the giggles began.

Sheer joy!!

Pure captivation!

Can I touch it?

I'll pop it.

Bubble blowing is a skill that my six year old could not fully master despite her most valiant efforts.

And more bubbles.

And popping and giggles!! The shrieks of laughter from popping these bubbles were INSANE!

So very much fun for less than $1.

(and guess who's officially the more fun parent now?!)

Our soccer star-- and I'm not talking World Cup here

So we have a little soccer star here. And though you might think it's this one....

She spends quite a bit of the game doing this

I don't blame here. It's her first time, the sun  is hot, there's lots to talk about with her five year old friends, this isn't her favourite (dance is). I might have been the same.

However, this is the one I'm talking about.

Our coach, Darin.

When I was signing C up for summer soccer, I noticed there was a $50 discount for the players if  a parent signed up to help with coaching. I asked D if he wanted to as he loves soccer and he agreed. Bear in mind,  we thought it was to help. When he went to the first training, it was then he realised that he was the soccer coach. Yikes!

He had never done anything like this before but as D usually does, he faced it head on! There was some training but not lots. He did research on youth drills online, watched youtube videos, studied the instructional brochures and was ready to go. Of course, I somehow got roped in involved, having to email the team, develop snack sign up sheets and become the assistant coach when someone cancelled last minute. Each week, in true D form, he does a debrief at home when he's done each week of what went well, what didn't and what he as a coach could do better next week. It's sort of sweet, sort of weird, sort of impressive.

I won't lie, it's hard work. It's dealing with five year old personalities, trying to engage the parents and motivating the kids without pushing them too hard.

A lot of time is spent like this

And this...

But I think he loves it anyways. I must say we're very proud. Great job, D!

He's also borderline obssessed with World Cup and watches every single match, the pre and post games. Who are you rooting for? We're Brazil and Netherland fans.... well D is and I just follow him 'cause I figure he knows what he's talking about.

Also, Happy 4th of July to my American friends and family. Enjoy the fireworks, food and fun! (and if you're looking for the best turkey burger recipe ever, click here!)

Father's Day Weekend

Well these days, I am what I'd like to call a World Cup Widow.... at least for the next month. Soccer is always on, we bought lots of beer and taught the kids to shout 'gooooaaaalllllll' when our team of choice scores. This weekend Darin wanted to do absolutely nothing for Father's Day except watch soccer.... bahaha!

On Friday night, we invited some of our neighbours over. Raspberry mojitos anyone? PS. I finally was able to use some of that mint that's been growing like a weed in my herb garden

My sweeties and I on Saturday morning. D was of course watching the World Cup.

Cassia had a playdate and her friend's parents told us to join them for a beer after. One beer turned into more and snacks and then dinner. Cassia was thrilled and so was Anjali as she loved Cass's friend's older sister. (I did as well, I hope my girls turn out like this kid--- so sweet and responsible)

This is Cassia's friend from preschool but they've kept in touch.

The kiddie table

Father's Day--- a painted rock was in that bag

And lots of clothes in this. I chose well as nothing has to be returned for D--- a major feat-- he is very particular with his clothes.

He then decided that he wanted to go for a Father's Day hike. The day was gorgeous so we headed out.
We went to an area close to our new house.

D says this looks like the beginning of a safety video--'what not to do on a railroad.'

Our little trooper who really, really wanted pancakes... seriously... We usually do chocolate chip pancakes for special occasions so she was not happy when I decided to do a special trinidadian treat (saltfish with avocados- similar recipe here) instead for D's breakfast.

The sweetest photo

Another good one

Seemed like a photo op at the time but instead ended up looking a little weird.

Someone was so tired from the night before, she took three naps on Father's Day!

This is the view of our house from the other side. I am falling more and more in love with the land space.

Then we headed to Cora's for pancakes!

And chilled out in our back yard.

And found a new way to play with bubbles.. it was empty, don't worry!

And had more raspberry mojitos.

Hope everyone had an amazing Father's Day!!!
