Monthly Musings--- Spring Cleaning

Happy Thursday!! Here's a little spring cleaning Q and A for your Thursday!

1- Are you doing a spring cleaning this year?
Yes and yes! With Ontario on it's third lockdown (yep) I'm finding the need to declutter stronger than ever.  Problem is that all the donation centers are closed so stuff if just piling up in the garage!

2- Favourite cleaning product?
I love my microfibre clothes... we are huge on reusing as much as possible here so we buy a bunch of microfiber clothes and use them for dusting, wiping, soaking, floors etc.... Old towels and tshirts also work. For tougher stains, I use Windex and Chlorox bleach spray but I need to go back a bit cleaner with my cleaning supplies-- no pun intended LOL.

3- Must Clean every spring
I do a bigger clean both in the spring and when the kiddos head back to school in September.... My must cleans include the kitchen cupboards, the kids' learning cupboard, the mudroom area (though I probably do this almost monthly) and family shoe/coat closet....

4- Garage/Shed Cleaning Tips
Shelves and bins baby, shelves and bins.... oh and purge  ruthlessly and  big time!!!

5- Pack rat or Marie Kondo
Definitely more towards Marie though I still think I have lots of stuff!!!  And I don't believe in everything she says... there's NO way, I'm only keeping pens in one area of the house.

6- Best cleaning hack?
Break up big jobs into chunks over the course of days/a week otherwise it can get overwhelming.I make a game out of it and set timers to see how much I can get done in a certain amount of time.

7- Help with house cleaning?
My cleaning lady of the last seven years (she took a year off) just got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer... She is also a close friend and we are devastated. She used to come every two weeks. We will eventually get another but not just yet.

8- Favourite cleaning appliance
The dishwasher LOL....I don't really love hand washing dishes.
Also, the vacuum. I bought a Dyson stick vacuum last year and I'm a huge fan.... though not as much as D with his vacuum lines in the carpet that we're not allowed to walk on for a bit (quarantine is driving all of us a little crazy). We also have a couple iRobots... we are big clean floor fans here.

9- Run the dishwasher every night or when full
My dishwasher is full almost every night, ha!!

10- Favourite ways to purge?
I either keep for the second kid or friends, sell, donate or throw away and when I'm cleaning I sort out in that way... love when things get a second life!

And finally some cleaning funnies....

True story--- my little one is playing with LOL dolls again.

Yep... sums it up.

Sometimes... I vow to be better though!

Thanks for hosting Holly and Patty.

10 End of Year Questions

Happy Holidays friends.... the days are long and glorious... lots of R&R and getting ready for 2021... In the meantime, once again, I'm following the 10 Things to tell you Podcast's end of year questions.

1- What will you remember most?
I will remember quarantine..... something I never, ever thought would happen in my lifetime given all the modern technology, governments and advancements... How much every single aspect of our everyday lives changed from work to school to diet to mindsets
...
2- Who were your people?
My three people at home, of course, my parents and my cousin Ronell, who endured so much in 2020 but who was so there for me with our totally insane conversations. My friend Jenn and I had the best organised and impromptu happy hours and spoke to each other probably more this year than any other year in our six-year friendship. Despite it being quarantine, because of the long walks we took, I got close to Renella and Natalie from my gym and Sheila and Lidia from my neighbourhood.

3- What was the best entertainment?
All the many books I read... My favourites were Well Behaved Indian Women by Sauyma Dave and The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer. I found myself drawn to another devastating time in history, WW2 in 2020.

Honourable mention goes to all those quarantine memes on FB and Insta that had me cracking up.

4- What were the most important conversations?
The horrible tragedy of George Floyd's death, the riots that followed led to so many conversations in our household and in the world about racism, goodness, fairness, bigotry, and both open and closeted racism.

5- What was the biggest surprise?
I honestly thought that Trump was going to win the election and Joe Biden's winning has restored a little bit of my faith in humanity and humankind.

6- What was the most consequential decision?
For us, it was getting our puppy, Toby. He has affected our lives in so many good ways and has added a blessed layer of empathy, love and caring to our lives. Our hearts are so full.

7- What have you learned?
That health, both physical and mental, is so, so important. Back in the old-time days of 2019, I had allowed some really small stuff to get me down. Now that 2020 has brought all of this stuff, I realised how insignificant it all was. My very close cousin almost lost his life and is still dealing with so much, my mom contracted Covid and the world was going through so much. However,  because of my attitude, I'm in a much better place than I was at the end of 2019.

8- What has changed?
I used to be more of a doormat, honestly. Now, I try not to be and I encourage my girls to do the same. Be polite and respectful to people but you don't need to stand for discourtesy and apathy.

9- What are you leaving behind and making space for?
Gluten as much as possible and experimenting with different options.

10- What do you want more of next year?
I want more of less.... less stuff, less fancy, less entertaining (okay maybe more entertaining than 2020 but in general less)... More simplicity and more love...

How about you? Any of these resonate with you?

Monthly Musings- Holiday Traditions.

Happy Monday, friends... I totally missed this link-up but loved the questions and thought it would be a great idea for a pre-holiday post!!

1- So many to choose from.... I love the anticipation of Christmas Eve but I would have to say Christmas morning with the kiddos opening their presents and then us doing a yummy breakfast is my favourite. Such a happy time for us all.

Christmas Breakfast 2019

2- I usually like a shiny top for Christmas for the parties we go to but this year it will be all about the warm, cozy clothes.

3- My favourite holiday dish is stuffing... I buy a store-bought one and fix it up!! I also do a corn pie that's a big hit with the family.

4- Our holiday plans will be all the fun stuff at home.... very low-key and very local but we are excited!

5- There are so many holiday songs that are favourites of mine--- maybe Silent Night?

6- Covid 19 makes me want to do all the special stuff at home for us and find a couple new and different traditions to begin.... all in a very simplified way, if that makes sense? Say, for example, a Christmas scavenger hunt, a virtual Secret Santa with family and maybe some zoom Christmas music sessions?

7- We donate to our local food banks and continue to do so this year. However, this year's neighbourhood food drive that my girls have spearheaded might be off.

8- Our tree is always put up before Thanksgiving as we aren't Americans... though I do a simple American Thanksgiving meal in solidarity with my American family.

9- My very favourite Christmas movie has to be Love Actually.

10- I'll have one or two spiked eggnogs for the season as D loves it so much and I'd never choose anything eggnog flavoured... my family on the other hand...

What about you? What are your holiday plans shaping up to be? Eggnog? Yay or nay?

Not Just a Mom- Skin Care Routine

Yay for Monday! Especially when it's the first day of school. Like everyone else, we are a mixed bag of emotions.... but more about that on my first day of school post in several days.

On the Not Just a Mom linkup that I cohost with AdrienneLaurenAshley and Dara, we are talking skin and makeup tips today.... I'm all about skin and makeup but haven't done one of these posts in a while.

Here are a few of my favourite skin care tips as makeup is its own separate post:

1- I wash my face first thing the morning when I shower and right before bed. I like a foaming face wash that's not too harsh as my skin is getting drier as I age. Consonant is my favourite and I usually look for a sale and then buy in bulk.

2- I use a combination of exfoliant (AHA/BHA) and anti ageing serums/creams (Vitamin C&E) before I put on sunscreen during the day. The Skin Medica line from medical spas is one of my favourites but I've also switched it up with the Ordinary line for a budget-friendly solution.

3- I recently started on a little resveratrol as well to brighten my complexion.

4- I take a break in the summer, but I also use a retinol at night.

5- I follow that with a moisturizer especially in the winter time.

6- I've also been loving face oils recently.

7- Because of all these exfoliants, I use a moisturizer with sunscreen every single day that I'm getting sun exposure. Origins is a favourite as it is also very moisturising

8- I also follow up most times with Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Foundation Powder with an SPF as well to increase sun protection and to even my skin tone out. It's been many, many years that I've been using it!  You can really build your coverage or just use a very light sweep.

9- I use an eye cream as well whenever I remember :-).

10- Water is my love language. So much so I wake up way too many times at night to use the bathroom but that's another story!!

There you have it? What are your favourite skin care tips?

Have a magical Monday, friends!!!

Not just a mom- fun facts!

Hey lovelies. Today's Not Just a Mom link-up that I cohost with AdrienneLaurenAshley and Dara. is about fun facts-- about me :-). I borrowed from an old post and added/amended several of these!!

  • I was born in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean
  • I had never seen Canada before deciding to move here
  • I cannot be easily surprised. In fact, only my 21st party thrown by my best friend and my baby shower have surprised me
  • I had spinal fusion surgery when I was 14 to correct a severe case of idiopathic scoliosis. Because of this, I have a steel rod in my upper back... D says that I really am a woman of steel hehehe.
  • I am a creature of routine especially with my kids and especially during the week
  • My favourite colour for walls is a grey-white (this changed from the last time I did this. It was light blue)
  • I am better at saying no than I used to be
  • I save my emails and texts- especially the sentimental ones
  • I love chocolate--- when I check the menu for dessert, I usually gravitate towards the most chocolatey item
  • I was a very skinny kid. Oh to have that metabolism again! But then again, I was also quite the picky eater and now I clean my plate... and sometimes my kids' plates ha!
  • I love a to-do list and make one almost every day. My little one loves a list too.
  • My favourite herb in the whole world is culantro--- but as I can't get it easily in Canada, it's cilantro instead.
  • I can touch the tip of my tongue to my nose.
  • I really learnt to cook after I got married-- I'm a quick study!
  • I believe there is inherent good in everyone.
  • I cannot ice-skate- never learnt in hot TNT and now because of my back I can't learn. Also, I never learnt to ride a bike (don't judge me.... it took a lot of courage to put that here!)
  • My two most favourite vacations so far were Italy (pre-kids) and Turks & Caicos (post-kids). I hope to go back to both these places
  • Though wine is my drink of choice, I love a really good, really dirty martini
  • I love my sleep. I can't operate on too little sleep- I try to get between seven and eight hours every night. The blue light from my iPad affects my sleep I know though!
  • Appetizers are my favourite! That way I can taste many different things!
  • I don't like clutter but at the same time don't like totally sterile surfaces--- a little bit of stuff is good
  • Exercise is so necessary for my mental health... so is fresh air.
  • My favourite scents are jasmine, lilac and vanilla.
  • I laugh lots but no one makes me laugh more than D.
  • I make a really, really big deal about birthdays! Just ask my family!
  • My language of love is words of affirmation--- maybe that's why I've been blogging for more than 7 years.

  •

If you want to link up in future months, we'd love to have you! Here's the list!

Now it's your turn to link up.... just grab our graphic, link back to one or more of us and join the fun :-)

    Our #stayhome lists

Good day, friends! How are you all? I mean really, how are you? I go from being worried, to being prayful, to getting antsy,  to being appreciative, to enjoying all this family time, to being overwhelmed. Basically, we are hanging in there but trying to make the most of it.

Last week, I made the girls made lists of what they think they need to do in this uncertain time. A bit of fun, a bit of necessary stuff for their learning, more downtime than usual and stuff they need to do around the house as well. It made them pause for a moment, really reflect on the upcoming weeks and build a bit of anticipation.

We are following a bit of a routine but not totally so. There is some learning, some reading, some math  and  instruments being practiced. However, bedtimes are later, mornings are sleepier, screens are out more and lots of baking going on. Lots of family time and fresh air too! It's not the norm for my routine following self but it works for now.  I want my kids to look back at this time many years from now with some fond memories.

So since I made my kids make their list, I also compiled a bit of a list for me as well. Thankfully, work is a little slower these days for me which isn't the case for so many of us. Here's what I hope to do in the days that follow:

1- Facetime or chat with someone outside the house everyday. It's all about continuing to build those social connections.

2- Clean a little bit most days. We are tackling little projects for chunks of time that have been on my mind for months.

3- Home cooking fun. So many delicious homecooked meals to experiment with and baking to be done. I'm also teaching C some basic recipes and kitchen skills. And we make popcorn most nights :-).

These peanut butter ones are super easy and you can even cut the sugar a bit.

4- Text friends and family who need it most.

5- Check out Youtube videos on self massage - my neck, shoulders and face are getting some relief. Who knew my jaw bone held tension? I'm also doing tons of lower back yoga and stretches I've found online.

6- We go for a walk every day. Somedays are longer than others but boy does the fresh air help.

7- Read-- With work being so busy, I've had a couple on my list for a while. Kindle Unlimited is getting some use this month.

8- Focusing on gratitude and quiet meditation.

9- We have been watching Little House and The Prairie most nights. It's really taking us back to a simpler time.

What about you? What are you doing to bring you joy? Any tips and tricks to share?

Not Just a Mom- Self Care

Yay for this March Monday! There is something about a Monday that's new and fresh... it gets old right around 2pm but for now we will hang on to it ';-)

    Now onto today's link up....

Today it's all about the self care, a topic near and dear to my heart. I truly try to teach my girls how important it is, not only for me to take care of myself but also how important it is for them to love themselves and take some time to refresh. I think that as moms we don't do that nearly enough. I think we lose it a bit as we get older... my kids do a great job at it themselves :-).

    Image result for self care

These are the things I do to nourish my mind, body, spirit and soul.

1- Exercise. I think the biggest thing I do for myself is my workout regime. I feel so much better when I work out and I've been doing it very consistently for many, many years. The endorphin rush is a real thing. Right now, after many years at the gym, spin and cardio classes. I've doing the F45 workouts, a combination of  resistance, HIIT and functional training. I'm a fan.... at least when I'm done, ha! But even when I can't get to the gym, I do Youtube workouts or go for a walk by myself or with my family. I think it's also important for my kids to see exercise as an essential part of life.

2- Meditation. In the past six months after taking an extended break for many years, I've started back meditating on many mornings. I face outside and use the Headspace app for a guided meditation. It's a nice few minutes of calm before my tea, vitamins and reading and the mayhem that is  oft' my morning.

3- Talk with friends and family. I don't take the time to chat with friends and family very often but when I do, I feel so much better.

4- I like a well manicured hand. Chipped nail polish really bugs me so I'm a huge shellac fan. Every couple weeks, I get a shellac polish change with either a very neutral shade or an in season colour.

5- Love me a good show and I put a series, podcast  or a movie in the background on whilst I'm working, in the kitchen, organising or doing laundry. Makes the task at hand way more enjoyable.

6- I love a hot beverage even in the summer months. Even if it's hot water and lemon, it's so good for my soul.

7- Doing laundry on a weekend is my self care as well as weird as it seems. That way, all the clothes are washed, cleaned and put away and I don't have to scramble mid week. Also, the kitchen being clean at night is a huge deal for me so I don't have to stress about it in the am.

8- I'm very olfatory. A  diffuser or candle is always welcome.

9- A night out either with D, another couple or some girlfriends is always great for the soul. And then every couple years, we also try to sneak off somewhere on our own!

10- I feel so much better when nourishing food is in my body. Smoothies, salads, lean protein and soups are my jam. I love chips and candy but as I'm getting older I'm finding my body is not loving it, ha!

11- A nice hot shower with one of my favourite shower gels (as I said, olfactory!) and putting some very emollient lotion. My winter skin has never felt better.

12- Sleep is so crucial. I'm a gal who needs between 7-8 hours.

    Currently--- on my birthday!!

It's my birthday, friends!! ANother year, so many blessings in my life. Every year ON my birthday, I like to do a little currently- sort of like a state of the soul if you may.... Here's this year's currently...

    Currently....
thinking |  That this past year really had its fair share of ups and downs but also about how many blessings I have in my life! So many things I try not to take for granted!
drinking |lots and lots of water and tea! But I see a birthday martini in my future tonight :-)
eating |all the soups and salads after a most decadent December.... However, there is also a piece of chocolate cake in the future as well tonight.... a quite large piece ha!
reading | Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult for book club next month. It's a good read but the white supremist's POV is very hard for me to stomach.
loving |We have been grilling on weekends. We put the grill very close to the door and are able to BBQ in the colder months. It feels like such a special treat.
wanting |to lose 9 lbs. I'd even settle for 4!
watching | The Crown on Netflix. Kind of timely with the whole Royal Brexit! I'm not going to call it Megxit-- as it's really both of them!
listening | To my kids squabble. They have been especially ornery this last week.
trying | to organise summer camps for my girls.
wishing |  that this year is a good one filled with good health, happiness and peace for us all.
planning | travel for the rest of the year. I'm not hating it, I'll confess ;-)
enjoying | the smell of this awesome cream.
day dreaming | We are heading out to some warmer temps in April and I'm really looking forward to it.
waiting |  to see how they explain Alex Karev's departure on Greys!
liking |Toyblast, this game that my seven year old introduced me to-- I'm embarrassingly good at it!!
needing | A facial. My skin is starting to get that winter dullness!
wearing | some colours.... in the winter, it's so easy to wear my blacks, greys and other muted tones but I'm trying my best to wear some jeweled tones as well!!
starting | to really love quiet mornings when no one is around and it's still dark, those first sips of tea and those first relaxing breaths of meditation bring me a lot of contentment.
smelling | my very favourite almond oil shower gel in the shower... it's the little things, right?
thanking | God for another beautiful, healthy year!

    Cheers, friends!

Not Just A Mom-- A New Link Up

Happy Monday, friends and welcome to a new link up. In the almost seven (!)  years of blogging, I've never hosted a link but I'm super happy to be hosting this one with some lovely ladies.

We have a ton of fun stuff planned so I'm hoping in the months that follow, we get some other lovely bloggers to join in! Here's what we have planned....

Now onto today's task at hand.... introductions!! The first thing I usually say/write in my intros is that I'm a mom-- kind of funny to start off with that when the link up is about not just a mom, ha! 4

Image may contain: Sarita PG, smiling, standing

I'm Sarita. I live in suburban Ontario in Canada where the people are lovely but winters are longer than I'd like :-). I moved here from Trinidad, an island in the Caribbean, to do my MBA almost 16 years ago and after that settled down here. I worked in Marketing Management at Energizer (the battery and the bunny) before having kids, taking a step back from my career and after a couple years slowly starting back in the world of corporate taxation. I work from home and not full time so I can be around for pick ups/drop offs/sick days and all the in betweens.

My loves in no particular order include:

    Warm weather
    Workouts
Clean cooking and eating (70% of the time, though it really should be 85)
    Reading
    Spending time with my people
    Weekend happy hours
Interior design (neither an expert nor trained)
Finding a real special gift or really good deal- mostly online
    Travelling and researching travelling!

Image may contain: 4 people, people smiling, outdoor and nature

Oh and I'm married to the love of my life and I'm a girl mom, to a ten and seven year old :-). Smiles, snacks and laughter are abundant here... so are messes, squabbles and repeating myself 12 times per day!

Hope you'll join in the fun on the second Monday each month!!

    10 End of Year Questions

Hello, lovelies and Holidays-- I say that until I begin to say Happy New Year, ha!! Hope you all are having a wonderful season filled with joy and fun!

2020 is coming soon!!! Here's a look at a little inward Q& A as we reflect on the past year. Thanks to Dara who got these questions from the 10 things to tell you podcast

    1. What was the best part of the year?
The best part of my year was the cruise we took with some family to celebrate my dad's birthday... It came after a pretty stressful couple weeks when A had a health scare and we weren't sure if we could make the cruise. So happy it all worked out and by then we were ready for a vacay! We had an awesome time and needed my family, the sunshine and beach time. As a bonus, we also made it to Universal as well for a couple days.

    2. What worked and what didn’t work?
Summer camps-- my kids will repeat their Girls Rock camp until they age out of it, ha! Conversely, they did a YouTube production design/Lego robotics camp and I felt they were on screens a whole, whole lot. They do enough screen time at home, don't need to pay for them to do it as well.

    3. What were the best conversations you had this year?
One of my friends told me "not to put myself in that space." It was eye opening. We really do that to ourselves lots as women and we have to be strong enough to change that!

    4. What was a discovery you made this year?
That if you and your family are healthy, physically and mentally, that's the most important thing of all.

    5. Who was the most influential to you this year?
The guy who created Headspace. I love the guided meditations. It's a journey and I love it.

    6. What was the best entertainment you consumed this year?
I loved The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo. It was so heart wrenching and well written.
I also love A Million Little Things and This is Us. Oh and our family became The Masked Singer fanatics in 2019. Love, love, love it!!

    7. Who or what are you letting go of?
Things that bring me down or stress me out. Negative energy is not a good thing, friends.

    8. What behaviors do you want to change?
I'd like to have more self control- with chips/cookies(!), with my patience with my kids, with screen time....

    9. Where did my beliefs shift?
I would say that recognising how important peace of mind and how gradually I  can actually achieve this was a big aha for me!

    10. Who do you want to be in the next year?
At the risk of sounding cliche, I want to be a good person and the kind of person my children respect and admire.

What about you? Do any of these resonate with you?

    Scandinave Spa Day

Happy Friday, friends! Here's a little recap of one of my very favourite days this week... our date day at Collingwood. I got a very generous spa gift certificate for my birthday from my most lovely friend and we were so excited to use it. We found a free day, albeit a bit late, got a friend to watch the kids for the day and off we went!

A two hour drive away, listening to music and having legit conversations....with NO interruptions!

Got there at opening with a huge line before us and were told there was a 5 hour wait.. that's right--- 5 hours. They take your # and send you a text when there is a spot. Off we went to explore Collingwood and The Blue Mountain resorts.

Snow, snow, snow! Before it came to us this week...

As my kids would say, it was legit cold! We had to bring out the bigger jackets and all the gear.

Breakfast time! The owner was very friendly and photo bombed many a pic haha!

Window shopping and walking around a bit.

The Pepper Palace-- so much delicious stuff if you like heat.

We picked up a quick lunch and then headed to our appointment. Calamari and cauliflower for the win.

No pictures allowed in the actual spa but this was at check-in.

So the spa process at this one is 15-20 minutes in heat (choices of heated baths, infrared saunas, sauna or my favourite eucalyptus steam room), 5-20 seconds in plunging cold (either pools or showers), 10-15 minutes rest either indoors or outdoors and then repeat as many times as possible. So relaxing and restful. Some of us even fell asleep.

We repeated for just under four hours and then went to a Greek restaurant in town for a delicious dinner.

Zoned out and hardly any makeup on.

    \
We thoroughly enjoyed our day and each other's company and came back rested and rejuvenated. It was a lovely start to winter and the colder months ahead.

    Linking up with Andrea

Happy Weekending, lovelies! It's the first swim meet of the season and we are ready!!
