Books Lately....

I have read SO much these past few months-- isn't summer reading the best!? There is something about the sunshine, the later (for me with no school) nights and those lazier days. Coupled with the few vacays that we took, I got a whole, whole lot of reading done... I'm only recapping a few though and I'll save some for another time!

The Nightingale: A Novel by [Hannah, Kristin]
When a book has more than 38K great reviews on Amazon, I figured it was worth the read. This book tells the story of two sisters during WW2 and the dangerous paths they took during this most awful time to survive, support their families and to help when they could however life threatening and difficult it was . It was so eye opening, heart-breaking and inspiring. Not an easy read for sure, this one haunted me even when I stopped reading.

A new author I discovered and now her books are on hold at my library! A very contemporary read of two teenage sweethearts, what pulled them apart and how their relationship evolved. A true love story with some very sad moments, lots of angst but so beautiful. Love her writing style (though some of her other books that I've read since then are quite racy and not exactly my thing!)

Good Luck with That by [Higgins, Kristan]

This book dealt with two women who are dealing with the death of their friend who passed away from complications arising from obesity. The friend has one wish for the two women: to learn self acceptance. As someone who struggles with body image issues and self acceptance herself;  this book was a tough one to read as I couldn't relate to some of it, could relate only to well to others and parts frightened me. It was serious, somber and emotional but around half way through when I saw there was a light at the end of the tunnel, I couldn't put it down.

Surfside Sisters: A Novel by [Thayer, Nancy]
Surfside Sisters- Nancy Thayer

I usually look forward to Nancy Thayer's lighter summer reads. This one dealt with two childhood friends who grew up and grew apart. There is a lot of jealousy between both women, not a lot of empathy and a whole lot of betrayal. I wasn't too much of a fan of this one. I found the protagonist weak and too accepting of stuff the other family put her through. A whole lot of character development was missing and it fell a little flat for me.

Daisy Jones & The Six: A Novel by [Reid, Taylor Jenkins]

Taylor Jenkins Reid knocks it out of the park again!!! Now this one was a page turner. A book written in interview/documentary style about the rise/fall of a 70's rock band. It was so well written, engaging and so realistic, at one point I thought it was about an actual band! One of my favourites of the summer!

What have you been reading recently!

  1. I loved The Nightingale and Daisy Jones and The Six. I'm big TJR fan! Good Luck With That has me intrigued.

  2. I loved the Nightingale. Daisy Jones was a hit for me on audio. I have Love and Other Words on my shelf to read soon!

  3. I always love me some Taylor Jenkins Reid!! I gotta get that one - the wait list is long at the library!

  4. I really like Christina Lauren's books - they are such a fun writing duo. I'd recommend The Unhoneymooners or the new one that comes out in October for "less racy" for sure. The Nightingale made me cry HUGE tears in public but it was so, soo good. Really enjoyed Daisy Jones!!

  5. I love Christina Lauren books and that book was one of my faves of theirs (PS its two authors - They combined their names and write under the moniker CL)

Daisy Jones is perfection. I will forever love that book.

  6. I've been on the wait list for Daisy Jones foreverrrr...

  7. Daisy Jones and The Six did feel like a real band. I didn't love it as much as Evelyn Hugo but I can't wait to see the series. I think it will be terrific. The Nightingale broke my heart. So good. I am intrigued by Good Luck with That. Adding it to my TBR.

  8. I loved The Nightingale! One of the books I recommend the most often!

  9. I've heard a lot of good things about Daisy Jones! :)
