Friday Favourites- Books Lately

Ooooohhhh,  I've been reading some page turners recently!  With the holidays, a stomach bug, some travelling and cold weather, reading has been my jam! Here we go...

Becoming by [Obama, Michelle]
It's no wonder this books has so many five star ratings on Amazon. It was compelling and captivating and covers Michelle's life up until this point with great detail and candour whilst maintaining class and respect. I loved getting to know her better and understanding a bit more about the Obamas and what made them the strong role models that they are. She definitely doesn't sugar coat a lot and is brutally honest throughout. It's a long read and starts off a bit slowly but it's so well written, highly recommend.

Swear on This Life: A Novel by [Carlino, Renée]

If you are looking for a captivating, quick love story this is the one for you. I LOVED IT. For Colleen Hoover fans, it reminds me of her writing a bit. The protagonist has had a tough life which has hardened her quite a bit and through the book you see her journey, growth and beautiful love story. It was happy, sad, funny, insightful and contemplative all at the same time. Even writing this makes me want to reread the book!

Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are so You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be by [Hollis, Rachel]

Such a great book. And I loved it for this particular time in my life and the milestone birthday I just had. A little life coaching, a little cheer leader and a little cut the BS and a whole lot of truth and empowering. A very quick read with some very strong messaging.

Evidence of the Affair by [Jenkins Reid, Taylor]

Love a good quick read with a  plot twist. Basically a woman writes a story to a man she's never met because she thinks that their respective spouses are having an affair. A friendship ensues complete with twists and turns.  For TJR fans, this was cute (and free if you have Prime or Kindle Unlimited).

And Then You Loved Me- Inglath Cooper
And Then You Loved Me by [Cooper, Inglath]

I got this one from Amazon and what a wonderful read about the Old Order Church, family obligations, strong teenage relationships and so many unexpected twists and turns. You get different points of views from old and young and the past and present. It also has some beautiful love stories between two old teenage sweet hearts, a mother and daughter and two sisters. I'd definitely read something else from this author.

What have you been reading lately? Anything to recommend?

Happy weekending, friends!

What we've been up to…
Lots of celebrations this month for my big birthday with all of my family coming from NYC, DC and Pennsylvania.

We all went out for a big dinner!

The more brave among us went sledding

They tried making uni-brows for themselves

The night before my birthday, the 'young-uns' were supposed to go out but D's back has been acting up so we stayed in and enjoyed some bubbles instead!

A little cousin birthday yoga

A birthday lunch at Little Louis'- a burger joint in town

Their turkey burger even without the bun was so delicious!

I got some beautiful blooms for my birthday and they're still going strong. Thank you so much to my sister in law and aunt!

A birthday martini and dinner out with everyone for win!!

What I'm dreading…

Tax Season is here and it's getting busy!!

What I'm excited about…
Mexico with all the family in less than two months.

Is anyone else enjoying the Marie Kondo series on Netflix? I was getting rid of stuff that didn't spark joy for a while now but this is making me want to clean even more!!  Apart from that, I'm also watching This is Us, A Million Little Things, Grey's Anatomy and The Bachelor.

Some American Girl Magic

Such a cold weekend with lots of family time, movies, card games and snacks. We did manage to brave the cold to take the girls to their ski lessons and go to lunch at a friend's place though so all was not at home. Oh and I did laundry like a boss so winning all around.

Instead of taking pics of all the stacks of laundry, I thought I would share some fun we had when we ventured to the American Girl Store on our visit to Chicago. My sister in law planned it out and it was a visit my girls will remember forever. C went to the NYC store and restaurants when she was four for tea but barely remembers it and A has never been. Both girls were so thrilled to go with their cousin. We made it a girls' day out and spent a few fabulous hours there.

I wanted the brothers to pose with the dolls before they left but this was the best I could get.

So many beautiful dolls to choose from.

My mother in law gifted each of a girls a new American Doll. Here is A deciding which doll looks like her.

She was one smitten kitten!

It was still decorated for Christmas and so pretty.

My sister in law generously treated us to lunch/tea there.

We had five dolls there as my girls took their dolls from home and then they were gifted the two more! More babies than mommies in this group.

Quite the spread for the kids.

So many delicious sweet treats.

I even got an early birthday treat!

This was after their girls got their ears pierced and they wanted to shop for some outfits for them. I should mention that the outfits cost more than some of my own!

Such a fun day that my girls will remember forever. Thanks to all the family who made it happen. Love you guys!

Big 4-0 Birthday bash!

Happy Friday, friends! Here are just a 'few' pictures of a birthday party D had for me last Saturday. It was snowy and it was cold but still... 32 of us braved the blustery weather to come out. D knows that I love good food, quality wine, family, friends and lots of pretty so  he and my bestie worked hard to create a magical night.

He had it in a local restaurant in one of the private rooms so we were able to move around a bit! I came early as he wanted me to check things out and slowly welcome everyone.

I do apologize in advance for the 1000 pics you're about to view.

No photo description available.

My parents and my brother.

My baby brother moved mountains with work and family to get here.

Ten of my family members came from NYC, Pennsylvania and Washington DC. Our house was packed and SO MUCH fun on Saturday and Sunday. We laight so much

 I'm owning this 4-0!!

And then after the beautiful appetizers (crab cakes, shrimp, scallops and spinach phyllo), it was time to eat (forgive my iPhone quick shots)

This girl worked so hard to make all this birthday magic come alive! Sidenote, some of these things are from her house!!!

These coconut cake pops were pure magic!

My kids were the only kids there but they had a wonderful time!

Special thanks to Andrea for taking some wonderful shots of the evening. And special thanks to everyone who made it to the end of this very picture heavy post.

We were supposed to be heading to a pub locally with a few friends after but as some of my family was only here for less than 24 hours, we headed home instead and  were joined by my two besties and their husbands. We chatted, played games and drank some special adult beverages. I ended up going to bed at 5:30 that night!!! I felt all the love from my nearest and dearest.

D, thank you so much for my party. You did so good!!! I truly appreciate it and you!

Happy weekending, friends!
