No grain, no pain

Though technically, there are many gluten free grains... some of which we've incorporated into our diet.

Dear Gluten,

It's not you, it's her.  On Christmas Eve 2020 (Merry Christmas to us), we got a call from A's pediatrician saying she tested positive for celiac markers. In 2019, she had another autoimmune and had been experiencing intense stomach pains for quite a few months. We tried different things including meds (both OTC and prescription), natural remedies and physical work with her. Nothing worked and if anything , it was getting worse. We were relieved and overwhelmed all at once when we finally got a diagnosis. Relieved that we finally found a cause for the intense pain and discomfort but overwhelmed because hello lifestyle change for our little miss going forward.

We decided to become gluten free as an entire household (for the most part)  to make things easier for meal prep, to avoid contamination and to support A as much as we could. Sidenote, we are still finishing up as much of the crackers/appetizers in the house. As Darin and I went Keto for quite a while and then transitioned to low carb, it would not be a huge deal for us. For the goldfish obsessed chicklets in the house, another story.

So here we are more than a month into the process. As per our doctor's recommendation, she is going completely gluten free for a few months. Going forward, for special occasions if she wishes, she can indulge knowing that it will possibly cause some tummy trouble. We are hoping that with age it becomes less of an effect for her but who knows at this point? Her tummy pain has definitely eased up a bit though not completely. The way I'm looking at it, things could definitely be worse.

We were all at home in January, a good thing since we've been able to experiment. We've found some wonderful substitutes and we've been trying different things. There are so many gluten free resources available. Takeout is a little more tricky but the couple of places we have tried have been so knowledgeable and helpful.

So many available resources:
1- Word of mouth. One of A's classmates' moms found out and has been a wealth of information on different places locally and online. A neighbour of mine also has experience with different grains like millet and sorghum
2- A few  gluten free stores in town with so many delicious items.
3- A couple local dedicated Facebook pages. It's put me onto different restaurants and different local products.
4- Our mainstream groceries, Costco and Amazon have so many different options available.

So chug along we will. Slow and steady wins the race?

Have a wonderful weekend, loves.

Linking up with Andrea as gluten free is my new favourite thing to talk about ;-)

Prime Lately and Currently....

Happy February, lovelies. I haven't done a Prime Lately  with Tanya in ages so I thought I would get it together in time to do one this month... here are just a few of our prime purchases lately since most stores are closed here in Canada.

Pet groomers are closed and Toby was beginning to look very shaggy and couldn't see very well. We bought this set and since then, I've been borderline obsessed with thinning his fur out a bit.

Post to come soon, but since going gluten free as a family, these are our favourite cookies!

I bought this set for myself at a fraction of the cost of my old electric toothbrush, which conked out anyways. I'm a fan and may or may not have bought another one for someone else.

This was in my package of presents for my birthday and they are amazing if you have long or thick hair.

Isn't this a great gift for a teen/pre teen? I got this for one of C's friends for her birthday and she loved it!!

Rain or shine, we are walking the puppy these days! This neck warmer/face mask makes it soooo much more bearable!

I was sick of the huge mess in my plastics cupboard and this lid organiser helped neatened things up just a bit!

And now for a little currently with Anne....
Loving:
This Trinidad pelau dish that I made this weekend. It was sooo good. We ate it for three days. It looks green because of the massive amounts of kale and other vegetables I put in it.

Also loving the fancy placemats for our family Sunday brunch this weekend.

Reading:
On the Libby app-- free with my local library membership. Right now, I'm reading Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb. I'm liking it more than I thought I would but it's a slower read.

Remembering:
Super bowl parties in the past. For the past few years, we've gone to our family friends' house for an awesome party. This year, we are on our own but these nachos that I made this weekend will be repeated for the big night!

Doesn't look like it but so many veggies in these-- I sautéed onions, mushroom and peppers.

Sharing
my mornings with this  sweet 'pup'-- technically he is still a pup until a year but at 25 pounds, he feels like a full grown dog. Coffee and snuggles do make a wonderful morning.

Wishlisting
To see my parents and family--- I'm really feeling it these days and with closed borders and Canada's limited vaccines, I'm worried for the summer. I know it will all work out but I have my moments.

What's new with you these days? What's on your prime list?

Friday Five

Here's to Friday in what in some ways has been the longest month of the year. Stay home, people so we begin to go out again!! Here's what's been going on with us....

1- Our sweet pup has been under the weather for the past couple weeks. What started as an ear infection, then became an ear flap infection that required a minor surgery which we then tagged his neutering to. He's been on antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and sedatives as well as wearing his cone of shame.... I drew the line at dog probiotics and gave him a spoon of yogurt. --- because a line had to be drawn somewhere...

While we are at it, let us take a look at all the dog selfies my family members take on my phone.

2- Thank goodness we got our Peloton and app when we did in November.  I've begun to listen to my body more and more as I get older... though I workout 6-7 days or week, if I want to do barre, pilates or yoga for an offday or a super short workout, the Peloton is great for that. Let me just say though, I've done spin in the gym and I consider myself pretty strong but boy do those cycling classes do me in!!!
Literally me....

3- My family's new vegetable obsession is cauliflower. We've always done the cauliflower but my kiddos have also started to eat it raw with hummus or roasted in the air fryer. I found the best recipe in the back of a Costco bag of cauliflower!

4- One good thing about quarantine is all the home cooking we're becoming even more proficient at. We bought some oysters the other day and instantly felt that we were  on Master Chef.

We brought it for the adults but guess who wanted to try it?

Doesn't look that great but we also did home-made sushi bowls, inspired by one of my friends who did it the week before. Also, the picture basically exhibits all the different parts of a typical Friday night here.... food check, wine check, a game check, a book check.... throw in some sugar and a tv show and we are in business!

We've also started to do lockdown Sunday brunches at our house. We squeeze some oranges, pull out our wedding china, some flutes and make a nice meal to start the week off right.

5- Also, take a look at this trouble maker when she isn't giving me grey hairs through  her online schooling...

She is a little extra but looks as sweet as pie in this pic, no?!

That's a wrap for January, friends! Have a good one!

My Quarantine Birthday!

Back in July of 2020 yonder, my family was like "Mom, you are the only one of us who didn't get a quarantine birthday, you're so lucky!" Fast forward six plus months and here we are kiddos!!! Here are just a dew shots from my quarantine birthday.... everyone gets at least one, you know? ; )

Birthday breakfast that my kiddos prepared... it's been a feat doing gluten free breakfast in this house so hats off, daughters!!!

Then some presents!!!!

After a call with my parents, I did my 42  burpees for my 42 years but since I couldn't capture that in stillness....

Oh these two loves.... Toby has been battling some ear problems so he was not his usual boisterous self...

Nicaraguan street food for lunch...

My friend came to bring flowers and do a distant walk with me and then my neighbours surprised me with a walk by parade and a glass of wine. It was such a beautiful surprise.

One of my besties and I then did a virtual visit and while we were chatting her flowers to me showed up!!! They were so beautiful.

Takeout!

All gluten free and all delicious!

Always in the middle, this little one!

Clearly, we don't have treats in this house too often.

This big kid of mine told me that she wants to be my best friend.... I'll take it, daughter!!

The balloons stayed up from NYE for my birthday! We are here for it.

Cutting the cake virtually with my parents was followed by some kid friendly standup.... I told them that I just wanted to laugh on my birthday!

Cheers to 2021, lovelies.
