Books lately

I've read soooo many books in the past six months and I'm only going to scratch the surface today on just a few of them.

The Dinner List: A Novel by [Rebecca Serle]

When Sabrina arrives at her thirtieth birthday dinner she finds at the table not just her best friend, but also three significant people from her past, and well, Audrey Hepburn. As the appetizers are served, wine poured, and dinner table conversation begins, it becomes clear that there’s a reason these six people have been gathered together.

If you could invite five people to dinner, dead or alive, who would it be? Why would you choose these people. I devoured this book in one day. I found it profound, wistful, romantic and magical. As the book progresses, it takes twists and turns you didn't see coming. I loved it and it had me contemplating for a while after.

Emmeline lives on a remote island with her father, who teaches her about the natural world through her senses. What he won’t explain are the mysterious scents stored in glass bottles that line the walls of their cabin, or the origin of the machine that creates them. As Emmeline grows, however, so too does her curiosity, until one day the unforeseen happens, and Emmeline is vaulted out into the real world--a place of love, betrayal, ambition, and revenge. To understand her past, Emmeline must unlock the clues to her identity, a quest that challenges the limits of her heart and imagination.

I love so many of Reese's book club picks and this one was beautifully written. It was a lovely coming of age story. I found it heartbreaking and intriguing but the ending was too abrupt for me... I needed my story wrapped up more tidily LOL.

The Wedding Date by [Jasmine Guillory]

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

Okay, this meet cute was a fluffy, light read but a little too mindless for me. Meet cute, steamy hookups, a big fight, lots of angst and then a dramatic gesture. I like my books a little bit more complex.

The Lies That Bind: A Novel by [Emily Giffin]

The Lies That Bind- Emily Giffin

So many people didn't like this one (based on the Goodreads reviews) but I loved it. I thought it was a true love story, complexities all around, with very relatable flawed characters all around with some huge twists and turns. Easy, fun, summer read but with a beautiful love story. I inhaled this book.

If Only I Could Tell You: A Novel by [Hannah Beckerman]

Audrey’s dream as a mother had been for her daughters, Jess and Lily, to be as close as only sisters can be. But now, as adults, they no longer speak to each other, and Audrey’s two teenage granddaughters have never met. Audrey just can’t help feeling like she’s been dealt more than her fair share as she’s watched her family come undone over the years, and she has no idea how to fix her family as she wonders if they will ever be whole again.

A family divided, a mother trying to reunite her two daughters, a huge misunderstanding between them, I got put on the wrong course so many times. This was another beautifully written but more difficult book as it dealt with death, loss of a child, betrayal and so many different twists and turns.  Compelling and so heartbreaking, I could not stop reading.

Well-Behaved Indian Women by [Saumya Dave]

Dara spoke about this one and I knew I had to read it. This book from a new author talks about the mother-daughter story of three different generations of women. It was so well written and it might very well be my favourite book of the year. I was trying to devour it and prolong reading it as much as possible. As someone with Indian heritage, I really enjoyed and identified with so many different parts of the book though I'm somewhat removed from lots of it right now. The ending was so realistic though I expected it to be a little different. I cannot wait to read more from this author.
