Yay says everyone else-- I say nay

Otherwise known as things everyone else loves but I.just.cant. Here's a list:

Pop or very sugary drinks- I like to eat my calories, thank you... well except for wine-- and I can't handle sugary wine either. I'm one of the only people I know who can't handle the taste of Coca Cola.

You know those nouveau suspense novels like the Dragon Tattoo series, Gone Girl or Girl on a Train that everyone is into? If I read one of those, I might just skip right to the end. Coincidentally, I did read the latter two movies and really liked them.

Dill. It stems from my time in Eastern Europe when they put dill on everything. Now, if I can, I avoid it.

Gore on TV- like Dexter and Game of Thrones. This year even Scandal was a little dark for me with the bludgeoning et all :-(  Can you sense a theme?

Those portuguese tarts- everyone in my family is crazy for the flaky pastry and custard filling. Everyone except for me.

Cool Pools-I freeze so easily. Maybe it's the island girl in me used to those warm island waters. Our pool is in the eighties at almost all times!

Road trips are not on the top of my list! Blame it on my car sickness or my crazy kids but there are so many things I can think of doing for that time. Alas, it's a necessary evil to save maybe $1000 with our crew per trip!

Washing and styling my hair myself- I have so much thick hair, it's such a pain for me to do it. I make the best of it, watching a show while I do it but if I could afford to get my hair washed an styled twice a week, I would definitely do it.

And in other news unlike most people, I love exercise and cilantro. Weird much? #owningit.

Happy Wednesday and happy second day of the three day refresh to me!

Mother's Day 2017

Otherwise known as the day of chill, eats and a whole lot of family time. Here are just a few random pictures.

Breakfast in bed, chocolate chip pancakes, fruit, granola and yogurt. We were stuffed...

C had a party so A and I did some gardening (i.e. weeding) before we cleaned up to head to a late lunch.

We tried a new place in town for brunch- I had the duck confit with eggs benedict, spinach and sweet potato hash. so.so.good. And of course, a mom-osa.

You can see my Mother's Day present in this pic around my neck.

We headed out for a midday walk by a river and trails. Such a beautiful day!

A bollywood movie and a totally chill evening followed with takeout and family time followed.

Happy Monday friends! May your week be short and your caffeine strong!

Fri-yay favourites

Happy Friday, all! Here are a few bits of happy around here on this beautiful May day!

1- On Thursdays, more often than not, we bake a little healthy muffin/bread breakfast for Friday and Saturday. It's a nice, somewhat controlled sweet treat to end the week. This week, we did zucchini chocolate chip muffins.

2- The kids tried a new pediatric dentist this week.  Why didn't they have these facilities around when I was a kid?

3- Has anyone tried cashew cream instead of regular cream? In my quest to reduce just a bit of dairy/saturated fats from our lives, I made it and it is awesome! Used it in a garlicky mushroom, kale, leek medley and also as a cream for butternut squash soup. It was SO yum!!

4-This kid has the best facial expressions. If this doesn't warrant the #nomnom, I don't know what does.

5- And to all the mamas out there, have a wonderful Mother's Day. To my sweet mom, thank you for all you do and are to us. Your loyal heart, forgiving nature and patient spirit are truly one in a million. I also would like to specially thank you for my low blood pressure and late greying genes. Love you lots!!

(at work, she's an amazing nurse)

Happy Mother's Day weekending, dolls!!

The Kids Behind the Blog-- May 2017

It's that awesome time again... time to try to understand the inner workings of my kids' minds with a just a few random prompts. Your guess is as good as mine as to what comes out of their little mouths!

FYI - C is a newly minted eight year old and A is 'techmacally" five. (her exact words)

If you had a magic tree-house that could take you anywhere in the world where would you go?
C- Paris... or like umm Italy
A- Either Trinidad or that place where we went close to Legoland and we got sugared strawberries. (I eventually realised that she was talking about Yogen Fruz- a chain where you choose your fruit and they mix it up with fro yo)

(Sidenote, all of these options sound wonderful to me)

Finish this sentence…red rover, red rover…
C_ perplexed expression
A- (Full disclosure, I didn't even try this one with A, I cut my losses early)

What is your best childhood memory?
C- Serious consideration: when Kavir came to Canada (this was when my brother, his wife and son came to Canada for a year-- my heart broke a little with this one)
A- Elin (her bestie) and Kylin (her other)

What is your favorite part about nature and being outside?
C- I just like--- outside gives me a nice feeling inside
A- I like playing outside in the summer-- and we need summer to grow the vegetables otherwise we won't be able to have  vegetables to eat)

What do you think Mommy would like for Mother’s Day?
C- a card and a painting....from me.
A- french toast and cupcakes

(I'm not going to lie- one of my daughters knows me better than the other!)

Also, guess who got glasses on Monday! ?
Okay two of us did...

And one decided to try out some frames-- you know, for future reference...
